Our Actions

Member activities are carried out in winter and summer. We organize various activities including parent-child outings, family activities, interest workshops, volunteer opportunities, and visits to public welfare organizations. Our goal is to expose members to rich experiences, enhance friendships, and put into practice what we have learned through readings. We also invite guest speakers and host lecturers to lead our members into a positive lifestyle together.

The Closing Ceremony

June 1, 2023, Closing Ceremony at Xinflix Auditorium united members to celebrate A.I.R.’s Spring reading session donation and the 2022-2023 closure. YSM fundraising specialist Eleanor, with two decades of experience, emphasized philanthropic philosophy. Her speech deepened awareness of YSM and underprivileged families, sparking care for street-involved youth. A.I.R. achieved a record-breaking $120,000 CAD donation and seasonal clothing/toy contribution.

A.I.R. led a reflection on achievements, evoking nostalgia. Gratitude was conveyed through four-leaf clover lapel pins symbolizing luck and hope. The ceremony concluded with a diverse culinary feast, fostering camaraderie.
Meticulous arrangements and enthusiasm left an indelible impression, intertwining knowledge, friendship, and charity. This marked a significant A.I.R. milestone, launching a new annual journey.

Yonge Street Mission Volunteer

IIn Spring 2023, we picked “Parent Effectiveness Training” and partnered with Yonge Street Mission (YSM), a 200+ year-old charity, for donations. We gave $12,060 CAD and a truck of seasonal clothes and toys, sharing care. YSM, since 1896, has aided people, families, and communities in rising from poverty with dignity, fostering respect and gratitude.

Around 50 friends joined YSM’s Double Take program, learning to sort and sell donated clothes. YSM’s community media spotlighted this. During our YSM visit, A.I.R.’s second-gen noticed the kids’ library lacked books. The CornerStone Book Drive sparked, embraced warmly by friends. On May 19th, they brought shelves and 250 children’s books, sharing reading joy in YSM’s computer center. These members also joined YSM’s Evergreen program, grasping diverse community environments and aiding the homeless. This charity-seed sown inspires future giving back.

Christmas Badminton Friendship Tournament

In December 2022, A.I.R. hosted a joyful Christmas badminton tournament at the Granite Club. Beyond the games, the event featured a unique “representative” gift exchange, where each member shared something significant to them – a cherished book, self-made art, or special ornament. This heartwarming gathering aimed to strengthen connections and spread holiday spirit. Through badminton matches and gift sharing, members not only enjoyed friendly competition but also embraced the festive atmosphere. This event became a memorable chapter in their journey, fostering unity and joy during the holiday season.

A.I.R. Scouts Day

On October 29, 2022, Scouts Canada organized an A.I.R. Scouts Day with a Halloween theme at the Woodland Trails Scouts Camp. In the autumnal maple forest, nearly 20  A.I.R. second-generation children aged 5 and above participated in the event. The children had the opportunity to experience team collaboration by building tents, enjoyed a unique scout-style campfire lunch, dressed up in Halloween costumes for trick-or-treating, and even tried archery. Experienced scouts also shared their leadership experiences with the children. As part of the donation, Scouts Canada collaborated with A.I.R. to create a joint badge.

Mid-Autumn Festival

During the Mid-Autumn Festival in September of 2022, A.I.R. organized its first back-to-school celebration for its members. A golden whole roasted lamb emitted a tempting aroma as it cooked on-site. A band performed lively music on stage, and children played tug-of-war on the grass, filling the air with laughter and applause. Both children and adults enthusiastically participated in auction draws, adding interactivity and fun to the event. The children played and laughed, while the adults gathered around the roasted lamb, enjoying a moment of reunion. This Mid-Autumn event created unforgettable memories and a warm and joyful atmosphere.

This Mid-Autumn celebration not only brought joy but also showcased the kindness and generosity of A.I.R. members and children. All the proceeds from the event, totaling $3,200 CAD, were donated to the SickKids Hospital in Toronto to support the medical and care needs of children. This act not only demonstrated the cohesiveness of the A.I.R. community but also cultivated the compassion and care within the second-generation members of A.I.R.

Overbooked Jr. Mid-Autumn Charity Art Exhibition

In the golden autumn of 2022, A.I.R.’s second generation, also known as Overbooked Jr., successfully hosted their first Mid-Autumn Charity Art Exhibition at the Hi Art Gallery, raising over $3,200 CAD for the SickKids’ Hospital library. This event was not just an art exhibition but also a platform for showcasing the creativity and leadership of the children.

The organizers of Overbooked Jr. meticulously planned and organized the event, inviting 73 members and their families to participate. From collecting art pieces to setting up the exhibition and organizing live music performances, every detail demonstrated their excellent organizational skills and professionalism. They also set up interactive stations such as watercolor bookmark painting and DIY canvas shoe art, which attracted active participation from many children.

The art exhibition was not only aimed at fundraising but also aimed to showcase the philanthropic spirit and social responsibility of the younger generation. Through the power of art, they hoped to provide more resources and support to the hospital library, allowing the children there to continue enjoying the wonders of reading and intellectual nourishment.

Shannon, a special guest from the SickKids Hospital Foundation, expressed high praise for the leadership team of Overbooked Jr. She sincerely thanked the A.I.R. second generation for their contributions to the community and SickKids Hospital.

Fencing

Grace, accuracy, speed, and passion are our first impressions of fencing, a sport of French origin. On the morning of May 26, 2022, the Action in Reading Club members experienced the charm of fencing at the Axis Fencing Club. We learned about the origin of fencing, and skills such as strategizing the best timing for an attack and ways to lure an opponent into a pre-set retreat and turns. From this occasion, we discovered ways to improve our will and judgement in the process. Not only did we acquire a new skill through the entertaining fencing experience, but also evoked deep emotions of courage and happiness from within.

A.I.R. Curling

The highly anticipated A.I.R. curling event took place at Granite club, after the lengthy COVID-19 pandemic-induced delays. The sizzle from the heated competition had the past memory of the freezing, cold winter quickly forgotten. The highly skilled coach for A.I.R. was none other than the Olympic national player, Viktor Kjell. With his expertise in coaching, this invigorating sport created a positive lasting impression on the A.I.R members. With friendships made and exquisite refreshments to end the event, this was certainly one for the books!

Candle creation at Kandle Artistique

The returning gift from the 2021 autumn reading club will be the candle creation activity at Kandle Artistique Toronto. There were 63 members that participated in the autumn where members were divided into groups of 7. We hope that everyone will have a luxurious experience in creating their own custom scented candles. There is nothing more refreshing than showing up in the morning of a late autumn day with your personal fragrance.  Yes, the gorgeous smiles in the photos are all our A.I.R. goddesses!

Sunflower Farm

On the sunny day of August 8, 2021, members of A.I.R. brought along their beloved family members to Campbell’s Cross Farm, a sunflower farm located in northern Ontario.
The stunning sea of sunflowers was the perfect backdrop for the unique pastoral dinner and sunflower painting workshop. Nothing is more rewarding than feeling the joy of kids enjoying the workshop, which made this event the perfect summer afternoon for all our A.I.R members.

Innovative OverBooked Reading Club

During the pandemic summer of 2021, several junior members created the OverBooked Reading club driven by their love for arts and reading. This innovative book club was designed to have senior grades read with younger children, to further stimulate their interest in reading. Participants set their reading goals to help raise money for the SickKids Hospital library. The first event exceeded the fund-raising goal, and the two founders were interviewed in March 2022, by the Chinese Canadian Times.

Do you miss the book discussion together that you used to meet in person, as you want anytime? Do you miss the smiles that can easily spread out during A.I.R. activities? Either a cup of tea or a cup of coffee, we have listened wholeheartedly to the readers’ interpretation and wisdom of theirs, followed by a sense of enjoyment and a understanding smile…“The closest distance in the world is not the distance between people, but the distance between heart and heart.” Let us forget about pandemic for a second, forget about masks, and stay away from the wearing real life; Let us follow in the footsteps of A.I.R., feel the pulse of the other world through movies, and appreciate the humanistic customs;Let us get close to each other, to have a heart-to-heart communication…

Luxurious dwellings come out of reading and helping others, it is the foundation of happiness.

Volunteering has been one of the pillars of A.I.R. , and it is also in our mission to give back to the community. We believe that the benefits of volunteer service are enormous.

Volunteering can enrich our life, trigger our thinking, and cherish what we have, there fore giving our bodies and minds positive  development.
